Once upon a time...

..... in a far-away land, there was a fairy god-mother, a troll who lived under a bridge, a giant magical bird, a few dimwits, a hungry cook, a forest, a castle, a looking glass, four know-it-alls, a bunch of demons with nothing to do, some mean relatives and lots of dead people. They all had one thing in common... Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Lone Star Lyric Theater Festival brings them to life June 23-26 in ...

Lone Star Lyric dares to celebrate the "Grimm" side of fairy tales with five world premieres. This ambitious series of newly-commissioned works by American composers consists of a prologue, three one-act operas and a Broadway-style musical, all based on unsweetened tales from the Brothers Grimm. Performed by a cast of Houston's best and brightest singers, pairs of fairy tales will be presented in rotation over the four-day Festival period. The musical prologue introduces each pair. Get ready to ignite your imagination, step into our storybook and be be carried away to a strange, wonderful world where unlikely heroes and ditsy damsels live happily ever after ... sometimes ... if they're lucky.

Simply Grimm Prologue
Music, Book and Lyrics by Omari Tau
Simply Grimm Prologue... The Pre-Show Opera Lecture... A Musical Lecture... An Informative Overture... An Overture with Words...A Musical Preamble/Foreword/Preface... is a very short "opera" in which four eager, if befuddled, lecturers attempt to prepare the audience for the evening's performance. Instead of giving the intended lecture, they find themselves arguing more and more over what the title of their erudite oration should be as they become distracted, musing about music and love. Music Director: Jeremy M. Wood. Cast: Randolph Lacy, Jason Lester, Laura Riggs, Loretta Seabolt.

What Your Parents Don’t Want You to Know...
Book and Lyrics by Aaron Loeb, Music by Kurt Erickson
Did you know Cinderella had a magic bird that could give her anything she wanted? If you were a girl dressed in rags sweeping your stepmother’s house morning, noon and night and had a magic bird, would you wish to go to a fancy ball? No? Well, that’s what Cinderella wished for in the storybooks. Learn this and many other shocking examples of poor decision-making in this new opera that dares to tell you What Your Parents Don’t Want You to Know... Music Director: Paul Abdullah. Cast: Tina Boosahda, Sarah Brindley, Danica Johnston, Jason Lester, Eamon Pereyra, Priscilla Salisbury, Oliver Worthington. Chorus: Crystal Anaya, Samantha Arizpe, Jonathan Cunningham, Ashley Traughber.

Clever Gretel
Music, Book and Lyrics by Michael Remson
In medieval times, a clever young cook connives to trick her master out of the grand feast she has prepared. With two or three glasses of wine and her over-sized bird to help, she mixes together a perfect recipe to keep the delicious meal all to herself! Find out how this sauced up wench outfoxes her slow-witted master... all for the sake of a chicken fricassée! Music Director: Jeremy M. Wood. Cast: Danica Johnston, Kelli Estes, Oliver Worthington.

The Man Who Studied Fear
Book & Lyrics by Mark LaPierre, Music by Paul L. Johnson
Twisted humor runs throughout this oddly sweet musical. Incapable of feeling frightened, the title character is an outcast because he is missing this vital part of humanity. In his quest to experience fear, he cheerfully wades his way through hanging dead people, dancing dead people, and murderous dead people until he unwittingly wins a kingdom and weds a princess. Music Director: Jeremy M. Wood. Cast: Shelley Auer, Jeffrey S. Lane, Nancy Markeloff, David Smith. Chorus: Crystal Anaya, Samantha Arizpe, Jonathan Cunningham, Ashley Traughber.

Hans in Luck
Music, Book and Lyrics by Omari Tau
Hans is a lucky man, but what kind of luck is it? Good? Bad? Hans may be dim-witted, but he's smart enough to foil a few scheming devils who try hard to break his happy-go-lucky spirit. In various guises, the conniving demons trick Hans into trading his lump of silver for a horse, then his horse for a cow, the cow for a pig, the pig for a goose and so on until he has nothing but a heavy grinder's stone. In the end, Hans learns a priceless lesson about the true value of things... if there is any at all. Music Director: Paul Abdullah. Cast: Alison Campagna, Jared Guest, Justin Manalad, Eamon Pereyra, Laura Riggs, Jennifer Whalen. Chorus: Crystal Anaya, Samantha Arizpe, Jonathan Cunningham, Ashley Traughber.
